THE HOUSING CRISIS IN IMMOKALEE
In Immokalee, too many working families in essential roles are living in conditions no family should have to call home. Families who help feed, build, landscape, clean, and serve Collier County are too often crowded into aging trailers, RVs, cars, vans, shacks, and worn-down rentals. Many of these homes are unsafe and badly deteriorated, with leaking roofs, failing floors, broken windows, mold, pests, unreliable air conditioning, and plumbing never meant to serve so many people.
In some cases, as many as 15 people live in less than 1,000 square feet. Three families may share one cramped space, one bathroom, and one small kitchen. Children sleep wherever there is room. Parents return home from long workdays with little privacy, little comfort, and no true place to rest.
This is more than a housing shortage. It is a crisis of dignity, safety, and opportunity—and a call to give hardworking families the chance to live better.
